Ujjain is one of the major seats of spirituality, tantra and eminent scholars. The city is considered extremely sacred due to the holy abode of Lord Mahakaal (Shiva). The Mahakaleshwar Temple here is one of the 12 Jyotirlings. Ujjain, previously known as Avantika is also privileged to be the place where Lord Krishna and his mate Sudama completed their studies guided by Maharishi Sandipani.
The Shiv Lingam here at Ujjain is considered to be ‘Swayambhu’ (born of itself) which derives holy powers from within. The day at Mahakaleshwar Temple begins with ‘Matmarti’ (Early morning Prayers/Arti) at about 4 am followed by several Prayer sessions scheduled throughout the day.
Located at the banks of Rudra Sagar Lake, Mahakaleshwar Temple has multi-leveled structure. The temple is situated inside the courtyard surrounded by high walls besides the lake. The Shiva idol in Mahakaleshwar Temple is dakshinamurti or south facing. Another unique feature in Mahakaleshwar Temple that distinguishes it from other Jyotirlings is the Tantric Shivnetra tradition here.
